What are the best side boards for a bocce court?
Quick answer
Teak, ipe, or redwood for longevity; quality ground-contact composite for low maintenance. Anchoring matters most.
Natural hardwoods — teak, ipe, redwood — resist rot without chemical treatment and last 15–25 years with periodic sealing, with authentic looks and excellent rebound. Composite and PVC boards skip the sealing and resist warping, but only exterior ground-contact-rated grades hold up. Installation matters more than material: 2x6 or 2x8 boards, galvanized stakes below frost depth, corrosion-resistant fasteners, a 1/2–1" drainage gap at the bottom, and a slight inward lean for consistent rebound.
