FAQ · Bocce Courts
What is the best playing surface for a bocce court?
Quick answer
Oyster shell for competition, bocce blend for most backyards, decomposed granite for value. Never pea gravel.
Crushed oyster shell or an oyster flour blend is the competitive standard — it tightens the surface and gives the fastest, most predictable roll. Engineered bocce blends are the best all-round backyard choice, compacting tightly while still draining. Decomposed granite is the value option with very good compaction and good drainage. Pea gravel should never be used on the playing surface; it will not compact and the roll is unplayable.
