FAQ · Bocce Courts

How much base rock does a bocce court need?

    Quick answer

About 4 inches of Class II road base over 3-4 inches of drain rock - roughly 12-14 tons for a 13 x 91 ft court.

A properly built bocce court uses 3-4 in of clean 3/4 in drain rock for drainage and 4 in of compacted Class II road base for structure. For a regulation 13 x 91 ft court that is roughly 14-15 cubic yards of base rock (about 21-22 tons at 1.5 tons per yard) plus a similar volume of drain rock. A 12 x 60 ft backyard court needs roughly 9 cubic yards of base. Both layers are compacted in lifts - skipping compaction is the most common reason a court develops low spots in year two.
