How much surface material does a bocce court need?

A regulation bocce court at 13 x 91 ft covers about 1,180 square feet. Playing surface blend is placed at roughly 1.5 to 2 inches finished depth, in two compacted lifts, which comes to approximately 15 to 20 tons of material. Underneath it, 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed base rock typically runs another 25 to 30 tons, installed over filter fabric with a drainage layer below that. A common backyard size of 10 x 60 ft is about 600 square feet and needs roughly half of those volumes — around 8 to 10 tons of surface blend and 13 to 15 tons of base. Order 10 to 15 percent more than the calculated figure. Material compacts, screed passes consume more than planned, and having leftover blend on hand for the first season of topdressing is far cheaper than a second delivery of a color that may not batch-match.
